Nepean Museum kicked off ‘Kids Crossing,’ its children’s summer programming, with two busy weeks – ‘Super Sports’ and ‘Terrific Transportation.’ The themed weeks were the first of seven in the Museum’s summer programming.
“The activities are fun and stimulating,” says Jihong Chen, an Early Childhood Educator. Chen has been bringing in young children from Playtime Daycare every afternoon since ‘Kids Crossing’ began.
“[The leaders] showed great care and love for our kids. The kids connected with them right away and love to spend happy time with them.”
Children enjoyed crafts and games centred on world sports, Olympians, road safety and transportation both past and present in the morning. In the afternoon, they participated in activities about the Olympic Games, trains and cars. They also had a taste of stories both Canadian and international about sports and travelling.
“We’re proud to provide engaging, high calibre programming to the local community,” says Andrea Raymond, the Museum’s Education Manager who leads ‘Kids Crossing.’ She works alongside her assistant Philippa Wolff, who was hired through the HRSDC Canada Summer Jobs program.
“I’m especially looking forward to ‘Silly Science’ Week, where I’ll be able to bring out my inner mad scientist, and to being a pioneer school marm during ‘Perfect Pioneers’ week.” enthuses Andrea.
Other forthcoming themes include ‘Amazing Art,’ ‘Nestled in Nature’ and ‘In Training.’
“The Museum is always [filled] with kids’ laughter. ... My kids have a wonderful time every time we come [here],” Chen says.
Programs are $5 each and run Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 9:30 am to 11:30 am and from 1 pm to 3 pm. Story time on Friday afternoons is free of charge.
‘Kids Crossing’ runs at Nepean Museum until August 19. Programming is also offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays at Fairfields heritage property, located at 3080 Richmond Road. To register, call 613-723-7936 or e-mail reception@nepeanmuseum.ca. More details are available at www.nepeanmuseum.ca.
